HOW TO MEASURE YOURSELF
When shopping online, knowing your measurements is key to ensuring a perfect fit, especially for items like leather jackets that require precision. The guide below will help you take accurate measurements to compare with clothing you already own. Remember, accurate measurements depend on using the tape measure correctly—don’t let it hang loose, but also avoid pulling it too tight. Here's how to get it right:
Length: Measure from the bottom of the collar to the waist seam.
Shoulders: Measure across the back from one top sleeve seam to the other.
Chest: Measure the full circumference of your chest. Start with one end of the measuring tape 1 inch below the armhole at the fullest part of your chest. Wrap it around your body (under your armpits, across your shoulder blades, and back to the front) to get the measurement.
HOW SHOULD A LEATHER JACKET FIT?
The fit of a leather jacket is unique and requires different considerations than other outerwear. Here’s what you need to know:
- Chest: Leather jackets should fit snugly across the chest, but remember to consider the types of layers you might wear underneath. For warmer climates where you’ll layer over lighter clothing, add 2-3 inches to your chest measurement. For colder climates where you’ll layer over thicker clothing like sweaters, add 3-4 inches. If you're between sizes, we recommend sizing up. Tip: You should be able to comfortably zip or button your leather jacket all the way up, even if you plan to wear it open most of the time.
- Shoulders: Unlike suit jackets, it’s okay for the shoulder seams of a leather jacket to extend slightly down your arm. However, if the seams sit too high, the jacket is too small. Leather does stretch, but a good fit in the shoulders is crucial.
- Waist: The bottom of your leather jacket should sit at or just above the top of your thigh, around the belt line. A jacket that hangs below this point is likely too big unless you’re going for a long trench coat style.
