"Soft leather" is a general term for leathers like lambskin and deerskin that are soft and supple. When making soft leather, tanners ensure it’s as soft as possible.

Lambskin

Lambskin (or sheepskin) is a very wearable and soft leather. Its natural lightweight layers give it a velvety texture. Due to its delicate structure, lambskin is treated less harshly than cowhide and requires more hand manipulation, making it more expensive. Although thin and lightweight, lambskin keeps the cold out well. However, it’s prone to stretching and doesn’t tolerate abuse like cow leather.

Deerskin

Deerskin is also softer than cowhide. It naturally resists the cold, getting warmer in cold weather and cooler in warm weather. The natural fibers trap air, making it feel lighter and softer. Despite its softness, deerskin is surprisingly durable with abrasion-resistant fibers. However, like lambskin, it doesn’t handle wear and tear as well as cow leather.

Why Choose Soft Leather?

Soft leather is lightweight, comfortable, and wearable – a great option if you don’t plan to beat it up.
